The Lightroom interface is largely a horizontal split, with a logical left-hand side for manipulating files and a right-hand side for editing settings. You switch between views using the tiny tab at the bottom.

As I said, Lightroom is made up of 5 modules, which can be accessed at the top right. Each is designed to encompass all the actions, left-hand and right-hand panels, that are part of doing the job. The remaining panels house the tools and control panels for different actions.

The Library is split into the two main areas; Organizer and Library. The Organizer is a set of utilities that handle not just the Libraries but also the slide show and web projects. The Library is where you add your photos, as you would expect. The Organizer is where you manage all your Libraries and the slide show/project data. By default, Lightroom uses the Library folder structure, so you only need to create one library to create both the main and backup ones. However, you can create as many folders as you wish (this does not add the folders to the Library) and can even have a folder for each event or collection you create.

Lightroom has a number of preferences and panels, all accessible from the top right. There are a number of tabs at the top of the Library: Importing, History, Organizer, Retouching and Tags. You also have a selection of panels to the right: Library, Develop, Book, Print, Slideshow, Web and Notes.

Many photographers rely on free Adobe Lightroom download for managing their everyday photos. It allows you to organize, edit, and share them easily. If you or your clients are renting a studio, a wedding photographer is likely to use it. If you’re running a small business, using it can help you market your work. Or you can use it to keep track of all those vacation or passport photos. Lightroom is also terrific for photographers who want to manage their images digitally at home and on the road. Even if you don’t need to be organized at home, you probably use it to look back over old photos of your kids, family, and other loved ones.

But Lightroom is less of a pain than getting started with it. A Facebook group on Lightroom and Lightroom Mobile is a great place to get help. Or, you can simply post in it on Facebook.

Adobe Social is, and has been, using some of the same technology as Lightroom. Like Lightroom, it lets you manage albums and documents, build libraries for the cloud, and share and promote photos easily. Also like Lightroom, it’s a great place to find your best shots. But rather than just being a place to find photos, it’s also a place to share them. And that’s the key differentiator for Adobe Social.

Lightroom lets you interact with your photos in a whole new way. You can jump from one shot to another, or go through the individual effects you applied to a photo. Just what did I do with this photo? Make it blue? Compensate for camera shake? Dehaze it? To see what you did, just click on a photo and youll see your edits appear in the Lightroom display panel. You can make another adjustment, see what else youre doing, or jump back to the original image.

If youre a pro, you can use the app to make multiple changes to different shots at once. Lightroom automatically displays the finished product. Or, you can view a complete collection of edits in one view. Its an easy way to see your best work in one place. Just as important, you can have a full collection of all your best edits saved for later use.

Create a catalog. One of the easiest ways to get started is to create a new Lightroom catalog. The catalog is a database of your images, so make sure you have enough space on your hard drive to store it. Launch Lightroom Classic and click the Create Catalog button on the Toolbar or if you haven’t yet made a catalog click . Be sure to enter a catalog name of your choosing and click OK.

The version available here for review is the version 8.2, which is currently the latest. There’s no separate review of Lightroom Classic, so this is really about version 8.2 of Lightroom. It offers a myriad of improvements and tweaks, as you’ll soon see.

The first major improvement is Lightroom’s Preferences panel. It offers five tabs: Lightroom, Color, Zoom, Lens Profiles, and Presets. Initially the Color tab is the only one you’re going to use.

Lightroom 7 offered the ability to toggle options on and off in individual panels, for instance, apply post-processing noise reduction only if ISO is above 100 and Noise Removal is checked. Lightroom Classic offers four similar panels, but now they’re in groups. You can have a panel for ISO, Noise Reduction, Lens Profile, and so on. Right-click on any of the groups to create a new subgroup, and you can toggle one or more options on or off inside each subgroup. You can also have a subgroup named Custom. Either way, toggles don’t affect the displayed options, and so don’t appear in the panel’s Group label.

Lightroom also offers dual-panel preferences, letting you adjust the same settings in two separate panels. If you choose an option from one panel, it will instantly appear in the other panel. You can also use a single panel with duplicates of the same button and options. This is ideal for showing a list of imported files, with options for each file in a single panel. The second panel then lets you adjust the settings to include that file.

Before diving into the things you can do with Lightroom, consider what you might use it for. While Lightroom is good at virtually everything—you’ll find yourself using most of its features just for fun—there’s some stuff it’s good at that you won’t need it for. For instance, with a little bit of work, you can easily adjust some of the raw (unedited) photos you shoot with your smartphone, tablet, or DSLR. You can then use those images as backups or layered edits for your print work. (See the bottom section of the page for advice on getting started.)

As a beginner, you’ll probably want Lightroom for its powerful but relatively easy-to-use editing tools. Start with simple one-click changes like cropping or resizing images, then use the “bake” feature to produce one or more web-compatible JPEGs, TIFFs, or PSDs. If you have more than a little experience with Photoshop, Lightroom’s editing tools are roughly equivalent, but you’ll be focusing on the tool set you know, rather than trying to learn a new one. (Actually, I’d consider Lightroom a step up in complexity from Photoshop—what used to be the “intended user’s tutorial.” The latter was stripped of its editing tools in 2005 to get down to the basics.)

There’s a whole lot of Lightroom that feels more a chore than an aid. You have to sift through the toolbars of the post-processing tools and other apps to find what you’re looking for. That’s not a problem for me. But for less experienced users, I suspect it’s a factor. Fixing the problem is complicated: it’s not until you do find something in the list of options that you understand why it’s there. That means it’s almost impossible to know what will happen to your photo if you run a preset like “Luminance Density.”

Fortunately, there’s a lot of presets that make the Lightroom workflow simple. There are nine editing modes, among them Tone, Sharpening, Color Balance, Exposure, Recovery, Noise Reduction, Contrast, and Vignette. There are seven Histogram views, five image editing tools, six local and Creative Profiles, and four Noise Reduction sliders. Plus five white balance presets. Plus the option to show rulers and rulers. And the now-standard tri-fold layout.

The tri-fold display is a nice idea. Why not have six tabs for the 16 Presets, the five Radial filters, and the current-image panel? The tri-fold display makes perfect sense for a non-UWP Lightroom CC or Reader 2019. But is the current-image panel better suited for a tri-fold or a three-tabs layout? If you’re just seeing the six presets and Radial filters, it makes sense to make the presets the only tabs. But if you’re seeing the tri-fold in a darkroom, maybe it makes sense for the Radial filters and the Presets to be the only tabs, while the other three tabs have the currently viewed image and the currently viewed selection. That way, the Radial filters and the Presets are accessible at all times, but you’re more likely to notice the current image when you turn the display around for an odd angle.

Lightroom supports file types including RAW, TIFF, JPEG, and more. You also get enhanced versions of those file formats, such as 12-bit AdobeRGB and 16-bit ProPhotoRGB for RAW images and 16-bit HEIF (high-efficiency image format) for both RAW and JPEG images.

Lightroom includes three major tabs: Library, Develop, and Print. The Library tab (center image below) allows you to view and even make changes to your photos. You can add, duplicate, and move photos, among other things, as well as adjust metadata. The Library is also the staging area for all your photos. You can make the changes to your images here, but they won’t go live on the server until you click the “Publish” button on the right side of the screen. The buttons on the left bring up controls for deleting and grouping photos. Of course, you can make more changes to these images later as well.

Getting started. In Lightroom, as well as opening RAW or JPEG images from the standard image locations (photos taken with a digital camera or images sent to the computer), you can import images from the camera, card reader, Dropbox, Google Drive, and Facebook. With the latter, you can sync photos and edits.

You can crop, rotate, and resize images. And you can also crop images that are in standard size and shape (not square). You can add effects, such as those described above, to an image, e.g. garnishthe image (e.g. change the Background color to white, add a watermark, and adjust the Brightness and Saturation). In Camera Raw, or any of the other image editing programs, it’s harder to add effects to an image than to crop one. With Lightroom, however, you can apply effects and adjustments to an entire collection of photos in a batch process (read about that in the next chapter).

Lightroom is an ideal photo editor and organizer. The application can help you achieve final results in a matter of minutes. Lightroom can edit images in the RAW format, while allowing for a wide range of adjustments. Moreover, the app can catalog the raw images. Apart from this, it can also perform basic image editing tasks, like color correction, white balance, retouching, sharpening and noise reduction, and so on.

Another option is Adobe Fresco. On the other hand, the Fresco can support cropping, integration with Adobe Bridge, and a lot more. However, it is not open-source, hence not Free Software.

To start the whole process, I would recommend to download the latest Lightroom update. Additionally, when you are adjusting the Exposure slider in Acr and move it into the exact middle position, it goes slightly blue and appears to flip to the other side of the color wheel. It has not been a problem for me. It seems to happen when it goes up about a few more steps.
