VueScan is a great app for scanning slide and film prints, and I think it’s what I’ll go with! I use a Ricoh scanner and the app produces good color. I had used, and was happy with, Epson Scan for a while, but Epson’s video software simply isn’t as good and fun to use, especially for videos I want to upload to Youtube.
I just didn’t like Epson’s auto-recognition, and I’ve since switched to VueScan and my old workflow back.

Given the variety of scanners and software, it isn’t possible to say which one is best. I think the Epson ones are more reliable. But their software is very basic and simple, so can they adjust settings that the others can’t. I’m finding it easier to get the best results with Epson’s software than with a more complex option like VueScan.

Using VueScan requires a bit of setup that might seem excessive when you consider it can be done with just a simple scan. But in reality, you can achieve a much more usable scan environment in seconds than when you have to fiddle with tedious and complicated settings. After you’ve set up the camera, then used VueScan for a test photo scan and have it crop the edges off the image, you’re ready to run your first actual scan of an actual photo. Upgrading to the VueScan Pro Edition ($79.95) will make some of these settings (auto-color, cropping, number format, etc.) automatic, but this is still more than required for a simple photo scan.

The Good
VueScan works well. It does a good job with slide film, but you need to fine-tune the various manual settings. The program has a good selection of standard lighttable settings to choose from, and allows you to adjust many of them. It also has settings for normal white balance, gray balance, tint, and a few other things that I won’t go into detail about here. It’s a good plug-in scanner that works.

The Bottom Line
VueScan is a solid plug-in scanner that works well enough, but needs to be fine-tuned and re-tuned to yield the best results. While Hamrick Software’s installation software is easy to use, the configuration setup is confusing, especially without an extensive knowledge of scanners.

This weekend I was sent a copy of VueScan 9 Professional Edition ($79.95) by Hamrick Software for testing purposes. What we have here is an easy-to-use and efficient plug-in scanner for the Mac that incorporates a few key features not found in other similar-looking products. It’s fast and has a few tricks up its sleeve that make it a worthy purchase for both home and commercial use.
